If you're just replacing an aging 100-amp panel with a new one of the same size, this is the cheapest path. But if you're planning any electrification in the next several years, most electricians will talk you into 200 amps instead. The cost difference is small enough that it's usually worth it.

150 Amp Panel ($1,100–$2,200)

150 amps is a middle-ground size that shows up in some mid-century homes and additions. It's less common as a target for new installations since the cost difference between 150 and 200 amp equipment is small, but it's a reasonable upgrade if your existing service wiring can't support a full 200-amp load without additional work.

200 Amp Panel ($1,300–$3,000)

200 amps is the standard for new construction and the most common upgrade target for older homes today. It comfortably supports central air conditioning, an electric water heater, a modern kitchen, and typically one EV charger or heat pump, with some room to spare. If you're upgrading anyway, most electricians recommend going to 200 amps rather than 150. The incremental cost is modest compared to upgrading again in five years.

400 Amp Panel ($2,000–$4,000+)

400-amp service is usually installed as two 200-amp panels rather than a single 400-amp unit. It's for larger homes going all-electric: heat pump, EV charger, pool, electric cooking, the works. Overkill for most single-family homes. If your electrician is quoting 400 amps and you don't have a specific reason, ask whether 200 amps with room to grow would be enough.

Fuse Box to Breaker Panel Conversion ($1,500–$3,500)

Homes built before the 1960s often still have fuse boxes rather than modern circuit breaker panels. Converting to breakers means replacing the entire panel, not just swapping parts, which is why this runs higher than a like-for-like breaker panel replacement. Many insurance companies now decline to write or renew policies on homes with active fuse boxes, which is the single most common reason homeowners get this work done.

What affects the price

Amperage increase

Going from 100 to 200 amps costs more than a like-for-like 100-amp swap because it usually requires a larger meter socket, heavier service entrance cable, and sometimes a larger conduit or mast. The jump from 200 to 400 amps is a bigger step still, often requiring two panels or specialized equipment.

Service entrance condition

The service entrance is the weatherhead, mast, meter socket, and the cable running from the utility line to your panel. All of it has to be sized for the new amperage. If yours is old, corroded, or undersized, it gets replaced alongside the panel, adding $800 to $2,000.

Fuse box vs. breaker panel

Converting from fuses to breakers is more involved than replacing an existing breaker panel because the entire enclosure, bussing, and often the grounding system need to be brought up to current code, not just the individual components.
